Slievenamon

Joe Ambrose views historic mountain.
Joe Ambrose looks at Slievenamon, the iconic mountain of his native South Tipperary. The Fenian writer Chrles Kickham wrote the song - Slievenamon - about the district and that tune has become Tipperary's unofficial anthem. The mountain is dealt with in two of Ambrose's books; The Fenian Anthology and Sean Treacy and the Tan War. Both books published by Mercier Press. Its sexual subtext is also discussed in 'Brotherhood', Ambrose's essay in Headpress 28, edited by White Panther/MC5 manager John Sinclair.

"It's an absorbing book. I suppose the phrase 'essential study' may be a little overdone but there is no other way of describing it. Its easy style, its arguments, makes it an involving read." - Peter Somerville Large
